The border crossing to/from Ecuador in Tumbes is full of people who try to take advantage of you so be very careful.

The border crossing is about 40 minutes north of Tumbes, in a town called Aguas Verdes. There are buses from Lima to Aguas Verdes that you can catch in all the cities on the way and it costs the same price as to Tumbes, so if you don`t have any particular reason to stop in Tumbes you don`t have to. This way you save money and a lot of headache from the drivers who try to cheat you. If you do stop in Tumbes, you can go to the border by combi, auto or taxi, the combi is cheaper.

The Peruvian immigration office is 3 km before the border, so you have to get off the bus there. The bus doesn`t wait for you to stamp your pasport, so you have to go from there to the border by combi which costs 50 centimos, or by moto or taxi which are more expensive.

If you go into Peru you have to take the combi to Tumbes because the buses going south don`t stop at the migracion.

As always in Peru don`t change money in the street because these people try to cheat. There is Banco de la Nacion in Aguas Verdes, you can change there.

The Ecuadorian side is easier. The town on this side of the border is called Huaquillas, and the migracion is 3 km north. The buses from/to Huaquillas stop at the migracion and wait for you to stamp your pasport, but you have to let the driver know you have to stop there. So there`s no reason to be tempted by the taxi drivers who offer to take you to the migracion.
